High-Redshift, Radio-Loud Quasars
نویسنده
چکیده
I discuss two programs to study radio-loud quasars at high (z ∼ > 4) redshift. Quasars are the most luminous, non-transient objects known and are observed to the earliest cosmic epochs. At lower redshifts, radio-loud quasars are associated with host galaxies having de Vaucoleurs profiles. By association, identifying and studying a sample of high-redshift, radio-loud quasars provides important clues to the early Universe and potentially probes early-type galaxy formation. The first aspect of this proceeding discusses an extensive search for high-redshift, radio-loud quasars culled from matching the FIRST radio catalog with the 2 generation Palomar Sky Survey. The second aspect of this proceeding concerns studying the radio properties of optically-selected z > 4 quasars. At the time of this conference, only seven z > 4 quasars were in the literature. The first program discussed herein uncovers three new such sources, while the second program identifies an additional five. We use the new samples to study the evolution of the radio-loud fraction, finding no evolution in this quantity between redshift z ≃ 2 and z > 4 for −26 > MB > −28.

X-ray Spectral Survey of WGACAT Quasars, I: Spectral Evolution & Low Energy Cut-offs
We have used the WGA catalog of ROSAT PSPC X-ray sources to study the X-ray spectrum of about 500 quasars in the redshift interval 0.1–4.1, detected with a signal to noise better than 7. We have parameterized the PSPC spectrum in terms of two ‘effective energy spectral indices’, αS (0.1-0.8 keV), and αH (0.42.4 keV), which allows for the different Galactic NH along the quasars line of sight. We...
متن کاملOccurrence and Global Properties of Narrow C Iv Λ1549å Absorption Lines in Moderate-redshift Quasars
A statistical study is presented of (a) the frequency of narrow C iv λ1549 absorption lines in 1.5 < ∼ z < ∼ 3.6 radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars, and of (b) the UV and radio properties of the absorbed quasars. The quasar sample is unbiased with respect to absorption properties and the radio-quiet and radio-loud subsamples are well matched in redshift and luminosity. A similarly high incidenc...
متن کاملNear - infrared imaging of the host galaxies of three radio – loud quasars at z ∼ 1
We present high spatial resolution near–infrared H-band (1.65 μm) images, taken with ISAAC on UT1 of ESO VLT, of three radio-loud quasars at z∼1.5, as a pilot study for imaging of a larger sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. We are able to clearly detect the host galaxy in two quasars (PKS 0000-177 and PKS 0348-120) and marginally in the third (PKS 0402...
متن کاملGb1508+5714: a Radio-loud Quasar with Z=4.30 and the Space Density of High Redshift, Radio{loud Quasars
We report the discovery of a radio loud quasar with a redshift of 4.30. This object, which is the rst radio selected quasar with a redshift greater than four, was discovered during an observational investigation into the evolution of the luminosity function of radio loud quasars. Here we describe results based on a sample of 300, at spectrum radio sources with S 5GHz >200mJy. In this study, rat...
